2012 demonstrated that we're getting... a little predictable.
After swinging wildly through the 'aughts, average scores for the Academy Awards Pool have stabilized in recent years, but 2012 took the cake. Number of entries? 26... same as 2011. Average score? 36... same as 2011. Number of categories collectively guessed correctly? 348... only five less than 2012's 353. Really, the only thing that seems to have changed in 2012 is that Michael Fang didn't finish in the money, bringing an end to his formidable (and record-setting) six year streak.
The winner was Steve Woyach, who's participated off and on through the years but never hit the money until now, though he just missed in 2011. Keith Armato tied Steve in score, but had one fewer category, finishing in the money for the fourth time in Academy Awards Pool history (he is, other than Dom and Amande, the only person to have participated in every year of the pool). Rounding out the top three was Tom Kruc, nipping Melissa Thorpe on categories. Tom is no stranger to the winners' platform, having won in 2010 and finished third in 2008.
The evening featured some notable surprises, with both "Hugo" for Cinematography and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" for Editing only receiving three correct guesses apiece. But perhaps even more surprising was that Viola Davis failed to repeat her SAG Awards success, losing to Meryl Streep in the Best Actress category. Few were surprised by Best Picture, however, where 'The Artist" was missed only by Ken Markus and Brian Gallagher. Even less surprising -- and just one pick away from being only the third unanimous category in Academy Awards Pool history -- was "Man or Muppet" for Original Song... but Wendy Bianco missed it.
That one was a big milestone, folks. Fifteen years of Academy Awards Pools. We've been doing this for nearly half our lives, which is... impressive or pathetic, take your pick. And in all probability, we'll be dropping you a line around this time next year, too.
Thanks to everybody for participating, congratulations to the winners, and we'll see you next year!
- Dom & Amanda
