2011 was a remarkably average year.
Though scores were higher than the early years of the pool, they were pretty much right in line with recent years, neither a peak nor a valley in Academy Awards Pool participant performance.
The only thing that could perhaps be described as slightly unusual was that the major categories contained two big surprises: Melissa Leo for Supporting Actress, who was picked by 35% of the entries, and Tom Hooper for Best Director, who was picked by just 19% of the entries. These were offset somewhat, however, by the fact that all but two of the entries correctly predicted both the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. The biggest surprise of the evening was "The Lost Thing" for Animated Short, which was only called by Michael Martinez-Mann and Eleanor Erwin.
No new Hall of Fame records were set, except that Michael Fang added another year to his incredible active streak of money finishes, extending it to six. Also of note was that your humble Academy Awards Pool organizers not only moneyed for the first time in a decade (Dominic finished second in 2001, and Amanda third in 2000), but they went 1-2, with Amanda finishing first and Dominic finishing second.
Once again, the expanded Best Picture category didn't seem to have any real impact on the pool, with only two entries choosing anything other than "The King's Speech" or "The Social Network," and no surprises.
Since one of the most common things we hear is that people feel they have to see all of the movies to participate, we'd like to take a moment to point out that of the 35 major category nominees -- 10 films, 5 actors, 5 actresses, 5 supporting actors, 5 supporting actresses and 5 directors -- the second place finisher saw two: Inception and Toy Story 3.
And thus we bring another year to a close. Hard to believe that next year will be the 15th anniversary of the Academy Awards Pool. Thanks for participating, and we hope to see you all then! |
