The results are in, and Annisa Wanat has claimed the Academy Awards Pool crown!
In a year when not a single entry swept the majors, Annisa still managed to top the number of categories called by last year's winner. Her 49 points didn't quite match the huge numbers we saw the past couple of years, but they still constituted the third best winning score, well in front of the 1999-2003 winners. However, deserving almost equal praise is Keith Armato, who matched Annisa for both points and categories. Sadly, there simply weren't enough bow ties present for him to pull out the tiebreaker. Rounding out the top three is Michael Fang, who actually predicted more categories correctly than either Annisa or Keith, but missed two of the majors.
The average score (31) was exactly the same as last year, though the scoring was more heavily concentrated in the lesser categories. Though there were other categories that fewer people guessed correctly, Crash was obviously the biggest surprise of the night. Only 17% of the entries correctly identified the Best Picture winner, and none of those 17% cracked the top five. The other big surprise was Cinematography, where Brokeback let down the 54% of entrants who picked it. On the more obvious end of the spectrum, Actor, Actress and Director were all correctly predicted by at least 69% of the entrants.
Also, one last item of note is that we have a new record holder in the category of Academy Awards Pool futility. Not only will Ali Nagib's three points earn him a free entry next year, but they'll also place him at the very bottom of the Hall of Shame.
So once again, thanks to everybody for participating, congratulations to the winners, and we hope to see you all again next year!
